Back to Harley Street

((From the Scouts' Return))
Coricopat ushered the three queens down the street, his eyes and ears on the alert. He didn't know about his sister, but he hadn't been back to their human home in quite some time. It was an odd combination of familiar yet foreign. Some things were not as he remembered them, such as some of the houses; they were different colors, or they had been added onto; yards, what little there were in the front, had been completely overhauled. He looked around warily, wondering if many of the strays in the area had changed.
We should make our goodbyes quickly. I would not wish us to be kept long out of doors. . .

Yes, I will be quick.
Tantomile wasn't sure why he wanted to make their goodbyes so short. He seemed to be looking for monsters in all the shadowed nooks around the street. She watched him with curiousity but continued talking with their friends as if nothing was wrong.
"Now, if you ever need anything you know how to find us, right?"
"We'll be fine because we're never getting out again," Emma sighed. "We'll be perfectly safe."
Rose pouted and muttered under her breath that she hoped the opposite.

Coricopat gave Rose a tight-lipped smile. He knew she was feeling stifled by staying indoors, but it was safer. With Macavity still on the loose, no cat was safe out-of-doors.
"We will come and see you soon."

As they came to a stop in front of the house, Rose's pout increased and Emma positively glowed with relief.
"Home!" Emma clasped her hands in front of her, raised them to her chin and sighed. "Thanks you for bringing us home. It was lovely to see you again. Hopefully, the next time we see you, it will be by the usual method through the fence."
She hugged Tantomile and extended a paw to Coricopat as Rose tapped her foot and frowned. Rose was not looking forward to being cooped up with just her sister again after having seen something of the world.
"You will come back soon," she pleaded with Tantomile in a whisper, "won't you?"
Unable to resist her kittenish doe eyes, Tantomile hugged her tightly.
"Yes, I'll come back soon. And I'll bring you information about the Junkyard. You'd like that, wouldn't you?"
Rose smiled in acceptance. It would have to do... for now.

He watched their completely opposite reactions to being returned home, Emma clearly content, while Rose was. . . much less so. He accepted Emma's outstretched hand with a small smile.
"It was our pleasure to do so. And I look forward to future conversations. Through the fence," he added, his smiling brightening just a bit. He cast a quick glance at Rose, noting her crestfallen expression as she hugged Tantomile, and whispered to Emma, "You may want to keep a closer eye on the doors from now on. I would not think it beyond your sister's capabilities to 'accidentally' find her way out again."

Emma's eyes quickly flitted to er sister's expression. Looking back to Coricopat, she nodded and smiled.
"Thank you for the hint. I'll keep a eye on her."
Walking up to the fence, she beckoned to Rose and disappeared through their escape hole. Rose stopped just before returning to wave sadly at the twins then retreated into the backyard and what she now considered a prison.
Tantomile grasped Coricopat's hand and smiled.
"Thank you for coming with me. That was the easy part. Are you ready for the hard part?"

"Not particularly," he replied with a pained look. Getting attacked before they returned home was looking better and better. . .
"I am not sure how to begin. I can't just walk up to Munkustrap and say 'I brought home a potentially murderous henchcat'. That may not have the best reaction."
His steps began to slow the farther they got from Harley Street.
((Sorry, it's crappy, but it's something! ))

((That's ok. I guess maybe I didn't give you much to work with.))
Tantomile nodded. She knew what he was thinking. It was a difficult subject to bring up to the protector of the tribe and it was something she still couldn't quite understand herself. She was concerned about Munkustrap's reaction as well, but she knew they could handle it. The queen didn't seem to be in any condition to attack anyone at the moment and perhaps they could gently wheedle some information out of her.
"Well, we'll just have to think of something that even he couldn't argue with."
Slowing to match his pace, she squeezed his hand.
"If only we could convince him that it's not a bad thing... What if she could give us some inside information about Macavity and the workings of his group? From her current condition, which was done by their hands, it doesn't appear she's wanted around there. If she returned, it could mean death."
Glancing over to catch his response to her idea, she noticed how troubled he looked. It made him seem older and worn out. The worry she had put aside earlier in the day came back with a new force.

"Yes," he replied thoughtfully, his expression distant, "perhaps she could give us information."
His eyes snapped over to meet hers, dark with sudden realization. "But that is the only bright side I see to this. It still does not excuse what I did. Munkustrap is not one to take lightly such treasonous actions. I may very well be banished from the Junkyard."
He stared down the street as he walked, his hand warmed by his sister's. She was the only truly good thing in his life. What would he do if he were sent away? What would she do? Yes, she had friends, he knew that. But the place of a sibling, especially ones as close as they were, was something not easily filled.

Tantomile knew what he was thinking. Not that she could read his thoughts at that moment, but rather that she knew him well enough to understand his way of thinking.
"Even if we never see the Junkyard again after this, it won't matter because we'll still have each other. That's the only thing that really matters, isn't it? And we'll still have Emma and Rose."
Looking off the the side away from him, she tried to think what life would be like if they were indeed banished from the Junkyard. If they were sent away, she would miss her friends, but they were nothing compared to losing Coricopat. He wasn't only her brother, he was her other half. Without him she would be lost. Putting those thoughts aside, a new idea came into her mind.
"It does no good to think of such things though. Munkustrap would be wise to keep you around as you've already created a sort of bond with the queen. You're probably the only one who could convince her to talk."
She smiled at him, hoping to reassure his troubled mind, and squeezed his hand again. She hoped Munkustrap would be as wise as she thought he was and see this as an opportunity and not a death sentence.

"Each other?" His tone was surprised, his face a mask of confusion. "If I were banished then you couldn't-" he trailed off, his eyebrows pulling together. "You wouldn't." His tone was accusatory now. "No. I could not allow you to give up everything. You need the tribe. There is safety in numbers, Tantomile. You know that."
Deep down, he knew his argument was already lost. He knew what she would respond with and she was right. As usual. He sighed in defeat.
"Maybe," Coricopat conceded, after mulling over his sister's impeccable reasoning. It was true; the queen did seem to sort of trust him. Mostly in the laughing-at-him-and-trying-to-hurt-him sense, but it was contact that she reserved exclusively for him it seemed, so that must mean something. Right?
Feeling the weight of inadequate sleep and stress, he wondered if they were ever going to get back to the Junkyard. The sooner they got back, the sooner he could explain his story to Munkustrap, and the sooner he would know his fate so he could take a well-deserved nap.

"You know very well none of that matters without you. We keep each other safe."
Tantomile was actually surprised he had given up so easily on trying to make her stay if it turned out he had to leave.
"It will turn out alright. I'm sure of it."
She could tell he was tired, and probably more than just physically.

Rose paced around the backyard daydreaming about Alonzo. She was still upset about returning to their home, though Emma and their humans were glad. She sat down under a tree, her tail curling around her toes, and stared up into the branches where a brown bird was singing. If she had felt up to it she would have tried to catch it, but it was so depressing being trapped there day after day. She had just been out and seen new things and met new cats. She just couldn't stay here now. It was becoming unbearable and they had only been back for a short time. As she watched the bird, without really seeing it, she dreamt of Alonzo coming in to save her from her life of boredom.
Emma watched her sister from an upstairs window and sighed. She will never be content now.

Rose paced around the backyard, waiting for dinner, thinking of nothing but escape and freedom. Maybe this life is good enough for Emma, but not me. She looked up to the window where Emma had been watching her awhile ago, but the space her sister had previously occupied was vacant. Thinking very quickly, she glanced from the window to the back door to the hole in the fence and back around again as a smile spread across her face. She really was quite ignorant of how the streets really worked, believing that things were only bad in books to give some kind of conflict for the heroes to overcome. Nothing bad ever really happened. She gazed once more at the back door where the human had just plopped their dinner dish. Emma wouldn't come out until almost dark. turning her eyes to the sky she grinned. That would give her plenty of time.

Before passing through the hole in the fence, Rose took one last look to be sure her sister wasn't watching from a window. Satisfied that her escape would be undetected, she proceeded with her plan. On the way back to the house with Coricopat and Tantomile, she had been overly interested in their surroundings. As she walked she recalled the directions in reverse so as to find her way back to the junkyard. It was beginning to get dark, but she hardly noticed. Her plan hadn't gotten far enough to be concerned over the loss of daylight or who she might meet along the way.
