((Half of the group from "Returning...A Bit Late"))

Etcetera dutifully followed closely behind her boyfriend -the term still gave her a thrill- her hands white-knuckled on his arm.

"D'you think my momma and sister are still in the car?"

She was imagining the worst: tied up, injured in some way. But if they were there, she could deal with whatever state they were in. She could handle that. If they weren't there, well. . .

Morgan, trailing, but not too far behind, replied, "Dunno, kit. Might be, might not be. Best not ta git too worked up afore ya know fer sure."

Exotica followed closely behind the couple and the creaking old tom. She didn't even hear their conversation as her mind was working hard to figure out the puzzle that was Coricopat. She scowled at her own bad luck to be forced to go in this group when she really wanted to observe Coricopat. She didn't have anything against Jerrie, Etcetera, or Morgan, but they were getting in the way of her need to watch Coricopat.

Teazer, looking down to the center of the yard from her den...which looked rather roughed up. She didn't really remember how it had come to be in such a state, but she couldn't take the time to think about it now because she saw her brother moving off with the rest of the party toward the car.

"Jerrie!" She meant to shout it, but it came out as a whisper instead. She took off like a shot toward the car, trying to catch up with them.

"Don't worry," Jerrie said, trying to be comforting. "Even if they're not there, Cettie, we'll foind them. They can't 'ave gone all that far."

Jerrie tried his best to be comforting without lying, but in this situation he found that it proved to be pretty difficult.

Etcetera nodded sullenly. She wanted to believe him, really she did, but she couldn't derive much comfort from his words.

Catching a blur of movement out of the corner of her eye, she jumped, her nails digging into Jerrie's arm. She shrank against him until she realized what the blur was.

"Rumpleteazer!"

Exotica jumped at Etcetera's shout. She hadn't heard a thing anyone had said until then. She turned quickly to see Rumpleteazer running toward them. It was then that their situation hit her. Here was another Jellicle, someone who wasn't missing. Who really was? Was there someone she would never see again? She blinked quickly to clear the blur that was beginning to block her vision and smiled at Teazer.

Teazer skidded to a stop when she neared the group. She threw herself at her brother in the biggest hug she could possibly muster.

"Oi'm so glad you're safe, Jer!" she said breathlessly. "An' the rest of you, too. Wot's goin' on? Where is ev'ryone?"

Etcetera quickly released Mungojerrie's hand as his sister flew at him. She backed up a couple steps and stood at a polite distance. She may have been his girlfriend, but Rumpleteazer was his sister; she had known him longer and better. Her relationship with Jerrie was much more important than Etcetera's.

While he was thus engaged, she took a brief moment to look at the rest of their ragtag group. It was an odd cross-section of their tribe, to be sure.

Exotica, the silent queen who seemed to disappear into the background until the need arose for her to step out of the shadows.

Morgan, the seemingly-crotchety old tom who once worked for Macavity, though she still couldn't see it.

Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, boisterous siblings who always tried to find the silver lining in a dark situation. Thank Bast they had found each other. She didn't know how they'd cope without their other half.

And then there was her. The youngest of their little group. If there did happen to be trouble, she'd be their liability. Sure, she could scream bloody murder and claw anything attacking her to shreds, but she couldn't fight. Not in the proper sense. If anything happened, they would try to keep her safe at the expense of themselves. She knew it and felt a deep sense of guilt.

"They done scarpered off somewheres," Morgan offered. "We're off ta question some queen that may have somethin' ta do with it."

"Are we all wot's left, then?" Teazer asked, releasing her brother so that she could face Morgan, but still keeping as close as she could. "Oi didn' see no one on me way over 'ere, but of course, Oi wos runnin' fast as Oi could. An' the lair's a mess! Oi've no bloomin' clue just 'ow it 'appened."

"Nah," he said, waving a hand dismissively.
"Got 'nother small group headin' up that pile o' junk yonder ta get an eyeful o' some queen that snuck in."

"Coricopat and Tantomile are still here. And so's Alonzo," Etcetera added with a nod. She just wished that there were more of them. She'd feel safer if there were more. "Someone went through your stuff?! Did they take anything?"

Exotica began to wonder what her den looked like if Teazer's had been ravaged. Was this queen in the car behind it? Was she even still there? The group had stopped moving to greet Teazer. She turned to look toward their destination. Shouldn't they get moving?

Jerrie had never been more relieved to see his sister. He hugged her tightly and didn't mind how close she stayed when she released him. He reached out and took Etcetera's hand again...here were the two cats that meant most to him in the world. Knowing that they were both all right made him feel that he could deal with almost anything else coming their way.

However, Teazer's comment about the lair disturbed him.

"The lair wos a mess? Were they lookin' for somethin'? Did they take anythin'?"

Even he could tell his voice sounded a bit more uptight than he would have liked.

Teazer looked at her brother for a moment before answering his and Etcetera's question.

"Oi dunno. Oi think Oi musta fainted or been knocked out or somethin', 'cause Oi don't remember a thing. Oi woke up 'n the lair wos trashed. Oi ran outsoide, saw you, 'n here Oi am. That's all Oi know. Oi s'pose, now that you say it, 'Cetera, that someone coulda been goin' through stuff."

Exotica watched the affection and relief flow between brother and sister and the connection between Jerrie and Etcetera. It suddenly made her feel alone. If she were one of the missing Jellicles woud anyone mourn her any more than any of the others lost? She felt sure not and it saddened her. Teazer's words brought her back to the matter at hand. When they got through this crisis she would work on her bonds with others.

"Why did they leave you but take others? I wonder if they were looking for something or someone specific..."

Etcetera looked horrified at the thought of Teazer being attacked. How could anyone do that to another cat? It was incomprehensible.

"Are you okay?" she asked in a whisper.

Morgan chimed in to answer Exotica's question.

"I'd say that they left the strong'uns, but I'm still here," he said with a rasping laugh. "An' there're lots o' others that shoulda been left that weren't."

He was thinking particularly of Munkustrap and Bombalurina, streetwise and tough. Most of the kittens were nowhere to be found, as were many of the older cats, but to think that they left only the hardiest ones was quickly becoming foolish.

Etcetera pulled gently on Mungojerrie's hand. The clearing they were in was creeping her out. Whatever had taken the rest of them could be there, somewhere in the shadows watching, and they had no clue where it would be. They were sitting ducks.

"Can we go now? Please?"

In certain kinds of writing it is normal to come across long passages which are almost completely lacking in meaning.
